The first module of the certificate program “Community Building and Effective Engagement” took place on January 14-16 at the Ukrainian Institute of Arts and Sciences in Bucha. The session focused on understanding how conflicts arise, why they become so painful, and what alternatives exist beyond the "fight or flight" response.
Throughout the module, participants explored the nature of conflict and violence, behavioral strategies for tense situations, and peacebuilding – not as an abstract concept, but as a daily practice for communities living through the reality of war. The curriculum also covered the anthropology of communities, conflict transformation, and the theology of war and peace, blending theoretical frameworks with lively discussions.

Beyond lectures, the module emphasized practical techniques, including role-playing, small group work, circle practices, and individual reflection. This provided a space for participants to slow down, observe their own reactions from a distance, and practice new ways of engaging in dialogue – both with themselves and with others.
We are grateful to the participants for the warm atmosphere they created. The group brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds, all united by a genuine curiosity and commitment to the process. The days were filled with insightful questions, active debates, and shared laughter, leaving everyone with lasting memories and meaningful realizations.

The module was facilitated by the Dialogue in Action team: Olena Kopina, Tetiana Kalenychenko, Denys Brylov, Dmytro Fedorchak, Taras Dyatlik, and Anna Dovbyk. Their expertise, attentiveness, and ability to balance depth with emotional safety provided essential support for all involved.
We sincerely thank the Ukrainian Institute of Arts and Sciences and, in particular, Liudmyla Shtanko for the partnership, openness, and exceptionally warm hospitality. Even amid power outages, we were able to work fully, remain focused on learning, and feel comfortable throughout the entire module.
We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Robert Bosch Stiftung for supporting the program and trusting our work. Thanks to this support, spaces for learning, dialogue, and shared reflection become possible.

The “Community Building and Effective Engagement” program carries dual certification and can be applied within broader academic studies or as professional development. It is accredited by the Academic Councils of both the Volyn Orthodox Theological Academy (Lutsk) and the Ukrainian Institute of Arts and Sciences (Bucha).
