On April 30, at the General Meeting of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Denys Brylov, a member of the board of Dialogue in Action, received the Agatangel Krymsky Award, which is given every three years for outstanding work in the field of Oriental studies, for his monograph “ for his monograph “Unknown Islam in Ukraine: The History of Islam in Ukraine from the Late 19th to the Early 21st Centuries.”
In this monograph presented a systematic overview of the history of the Muslim community and the formation of Islamic discourse in Ukraine from the late 19th century to the present day. The main conclusion of the study is that the continuity of institutional formations and individual Muslim communities in Ukraine has been preserved since the late 19th century. Thanks to formal, informal, and underground structures, Muslims living in modern Ukraine have preserved, transformed, and passed on their Islamic identity for almost 130 years. The monograph also examines in detail the activities of transnational Islamic movements in the Muslim community of Ukraine and their links with like-minded people in the Islamic world.
