How to Talk to Children Whose Family Members Are Missing: Information Sessions for Educators in Zaporizhzhia

From 17 to 26 August, Olena Kopina, facilitator and educational programme developer at “Dialogue in Action,” will conduct information sessions entitled “Specifics of Communication with Families of Persons Missing Under Special Circumstances.”

Children whose family members have gone missing, are in captivity, are being held as civilian hostages, or have died as a result of the war experience a complex emotional reality every day. Teachers and school psychologists are often the first adults a child turns to and trusts, so choosing the right words can either give them a sense of support or cause them to withdraw even further.

During the information sessions, participants will explore the concept of “ambiguous loss” and its psychological, social and economic consequences for families; cultural perceptions of such loss and the lack of social recognition; and how it affects children of different ages and their behaviour. Olena will also introduce specific communication techniques for talking to children, an algorithm for the first conversation with a family that has just learned that a loved one is missing, and areas of support for adult family members living with uncertainty.

The information sessions are held as part of the project “We Think of You. We Know You Are There…” implemented by the NGO “Egida. Zaporizhzhia” with the support of the Partnership for a Strong Ukraine Fund (PFRU).

You can choose a date that is convenient for you: 17, 18, 19, 20, 25 or 26 August. The session lasts three hours.
